Nov. 6th, 2011 09:59 amOne of the other family trees I manage is for a very dear friend whose birth surname was Schmiedeskamp.
Her great great grandfather, Simon Schmiedeskamp, along with his wife, Henrietta Duebeler - as well as his brother, Frederich, and Frederich's wife - arrived in the United States at the Port of New Orleans on 17 Oct 1852, aboard the Bremerhaven. They sailed from Bremen, Germany.
I can't imagine the feeling of culture shock - a family of native Germans docking deep in the heart of Creole America, a much different melting pot of established families and lineages that really were speaking a different language. If any of the Schmiedeskamps were fluent in French, it might have gotten them to a boardinghouse. Maybe. Creole and Acadian French are much different languages than Parisian French.
I didn't locate Simon Schmiedeskamp in the 1860 or 1870 censuses, although I know brother Frederich was living in Adams Co., IL in 1870.
Quincy, the county seat of Adams County, had established itself as a thriving Mississippi River transportation city in the 19th century, so my guess is that once they unloaded their stuff from the Bremerhaven, the Schmiedeskamps probably turned around and booked passage on one of many riverboats headed to join the German immigrants who settled in Quincy since the 1840s, alongside their New England Yankee neighbors.
By 1880, Simon Schmiedeskamp had moved his family to Widner, Knox Co., IN.
In the 2000 census, 26.3% of Knox County's population was of German descent.
