I've always loved this photo for its simplicity.

They are Mary Jane Franklin and James Franklin Burris, sometime before her death in 1888 in Allen County, KS.

It is a strong photo. She's almost like a column with that straight neck.

And I love the details. Just as I'm thinking Plains, and wind, and hardscrabble farm life I noticed the narrow clapboards and the brickwork. They were quite established when this was taken, weren't they? In town or still on the farm?

Still on the farm.

He was also a blacksmith.
