    <title>Social Security Administration restricts un-redacted access to SS5s</title>

    <content type="html">If you've ever used an SS5 - the application for a Social Security card - to find out the identities of the parents of the applicant, you need to read Megan Smolenyak's post &lt;a href="http://megansmolenyak.posterous.com/social-security-administration-extends-foia-r"&gt;here.&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Unless the applicant was born at least 100 years ago, the SSA is going to black out the names of his/her parents, for privacy reasons.  However, if you can prove the parents are dead, you're good to go.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And if you could do that, you wouldn't want to see what the names were on the SS5, now would you?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I mean a parent who was born 118, 125, or more years ago is entitled to his/her privacy, right?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Can our government get any lamer?  Wonder which 140 year old parent complained?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.dreamwidth.org/tools/commentcount?user=dee_burris&amp;ditemid=102485" width="30" height="12" alt="comment count unavailable" style="vertical-align: middle;"/&gt; comments</content>
