Remembering Aunt Emma

Aunt Emma was the oldest sister of my paternal grandfather, Goerge Washington Burris, Jr. She was the only one of his four sisters to live to adulthood, and I always had the sense that they were a very close sibling pair - after all, Granddaddy named his second daughter after her.

Aunt Emma outlived my granddad by eight years.
She was born Dora Emma Burris, fourth child of George Washington Burris, Sr., and Mary Mathilda Wharton, and their first daughter.

She was, as were all her brothers and sisters, born "on Isabel Creek," in those days before birth certificates required exact locations of birth. Isabel Creek was, and still is, an important landmark in rural Pope Co., AR.

Emma married Walter Thomas Crites, who was known as Tom or Tommy, on 15 May 1906, just before her 21st birthday. Tom Crites was the son of Adam "Green" Crites and Mary Elizabeth Worsham.

Emma's firstborn son, Eldrege, was not quite six months old when she and Tom Crites married. My understanding is that from the day they married, Eldrege became - and was always treated as - Tom's son. End of story.

Emma's family grew. She and Tom had a son, Elston Reece, on 9 Sep 1907, and a daughter, Hazel Matilda, on 10 Oct 1908.

Emma must have been pregnant with Hazel when this family photo was taken.

Emma and Tom had a son, named for Emma's father and younger brother, on 15 Nov 1909. George Washington Crites died shortly after his first birthday on 30 Nov 1910.

Tom Crites died on 10 Jul 1950, so I never knew him.
I knew Aunt Emma when she was much older - in her late 70s and early 80s.

When I was a kid, we camped not far from her little house on Crites Road - the house that still had a wood cookstove. I'd go to her house to dig beside her chicken coop for the big, fat worms we used for fish bait. She always sent us home after the weekend was over with something she had canned.

And if the conversation took a turn she didn't like, she turned her hearing aids off, and shouted, Can't hear ya...
We have photos of Aunt Emma on grandaddy's birthday and hers.

Ora Lee (Settle) Meek, 1866-1893

Ora Lee Settle was the first wife of my great grand uncle, William Thaddeus Meek. She was the daughter of Willis Franklin Settle and Betsey A White, born on 6 May 1866 in Barren Co., KY.

Lee, as she was called, married William Thaddeus Meek on 18 Nov 1885 in Russellville, Pope Co., AR, where Thaddeus was living after his mother, Mary Emily Conner divorced his father and remarried a man named Samuel Webb, all in the space of 16 days in October 1871.

The Webbs moved to Russellville with Mary's children, Maxie and Thaddeus.

I knew Lee died young, but until I found her death notice in the Russellville Democrat while I was at the Arkansas History Commission today, I had no idea of the circumstances surrounding her death - which was very sudden.

The Russellville Democrat, 18 May 1893:
The death of Mrs. W. T. Meek which took place last Saturday afternoon was one of the saddest that ever occurred in this city. She died at home alone, from cause unknown, but supposed to be some heart trouble, between one and two o'clock and the discovery of the fact was not made until 6 o'clock when Mrs. Patrick, a neighbor, happened to call and found her lifeless body on the floor of her dressing apartment. Her husband left her at the dinner hour apparently in good health and excellent spirits. She spoke to him of feeling better than [illegible] intention to visit the homes of her friends during the afternoon. From the surroundings of the death chamber it is evident that she was preparing to make those calls when the dread summons came. That her death was sudden and painless is evidenced by the fact that her eyes were closed and her face wore a calm expression as if in gentle slumber.

Heartrending, always, is a death like this. But there is this consolation to the stricken husband and two little children, relatives and friends, the memory of a life so noble, so self-sacrificing, so worthy of emulation in every way will remain forever an inspiration and a benediction.

Services were held Sunday afternoon at the family residence by Eld. G W Harkey, who preached a touching funeral sermon. Afterward the remains were taken to the city cemetery for interment followed by a large number of friends and relatives.

To the husband and family who are heart-broken the most profound and sincere sympathy of the entire community is tendered.

We'll take a closer look at it, then...

Apparently my post about what I believe to be the very old Freeman homeplace has caused a bit of a stir with some folks.

One being my cousin-in-law, who is almost sure it isn't, and said as much to the two Freeman descendants who came to look at it up close and in person this past weekend.

He has his reasons - which he and I discussed by phone earlier this evening.

One of them being that it is not a dogtrot house, since they were usually two cabins, each with its own fireplace, with a breezeway in the middle.

And he's right about that - it isn't a dogtrot.

And I didn't say it was.

I said it is a shotgun house which was very popular with poor people, and very easily added on to, as we see in the homestead I *still* believe is the Freeman place.

My reasons are more mundane. There's that matter of the nearby creek, which isn't where it needs to be in the southwest part of Section 11 cousin-in-law says the house is in, but is there in Section 14, where I say it is.

So we'll be looking at some more plat books...

Random musings...

I got a contact about my post on the very old Freeman place from a descendant of William Aflred Freeman.

She was excited to see the photos, which I invited her to copy for her own use. And she also gave me some more information about Freeman descendants.

Which I have dutifully researched and added to my GEDCOM.

We aren't cousins, but I keep up with the ones who married into my family anyway.

Because you just never can tell when someone might need some information.
I've spent some time this morning working on another family tree I manage for a dear friend.

Right now, I'm messing with Joseph Wesley Roach, born 16 Dec 1884 in Missouri and died 4 Jan 1978 in Randolph Co., AR.

My friend's mother is a Randolph County Roach. I know Joseph Wesley figures into her line of Roaches somehow - there were quite a few who stopped off in Missouri on their way south from Illinois to Randolph County. He named his sons some of the favored male Roach names - Jesse, James, Arthur.

I just can't find his parents.

Yet.
I'd love to be graving.

But it is just too fricking hot.

Every day, I get my Weather Channel text advising of dangerous heat indices. Not that I need the official notice.

We have reached that time in Arkansas summer where you can step outside your front door and feel that the air has mass from the combination of temperature and humidity. The cottage has not received any measurable rainfall since June 28.

I've been looking back at the family photos I have of ancestral homeplaces. Thinking about how it was that they tried to beat the heat of Arkansas summers before the days of air conditioning.

Like the Williams' home in Russellville.

Or the Herrington homeplace in Clark County.

In the two photos above, you can see 1) the shed behind the house, and 2) part of the covered front porch of the house.

The Williams home also had covered porches.

Did they sleep on them in the summertime?

More things that make me say, hmmmm...

Well, Great Granddaddy was multi-faceted, I guess...

I never knew he was a tanner before he was a farmer.

From History of Pope County, Arkansas, (publ. 1979 by Pope County Historical Assn. and Hunter Publishing Co.) at page 177:

James Littleton Burris was a tanner by trade, operating two tan yards and farming on the side. His saddle shop and main tan yard, across the road from his home, were located on Isabel Creek in a red oak grove near some springs. During the Civil War, James Littleton had a contract with the Confederate government to supply its troops with boots, shoes, saddles and harnesses. Soldiers were sent to his saddle shop to pick up orders. As many as eighteen men worked in his tannery during this period. Five of his sons and three nephews that he reared worked there as they grew up.

When the first son married, he continued to work for his father until he could leave home and become self-supporting. James Littleton built a tiny log house near by, and the bride and groom moved in. The other sons used it when their turns came and it soon became known as the 'weaning house.'

Would be cool to find the foundation for either the tannery or the weaning house...

Yo, Dad...whatcha got going on later this month?

I'll bring your books back with me.
