I blew that handwritten letter up to about 200% to make sure I was reading it correctly. I could not believe - our holy cause. (The link under James Alexander's name goes to a previous entry where the letter is embedded.) So I checked the 1850 and 1860 slave censuses for the dear old Rev and saw why he felt that way.
