When did we quit using aprons?

I put on my apron a while ago to wash dishes and deal with other sloppy stuff. It took me back.

To a time I vividly remember, when both of my grandmothers, and the one great-grandmother who was living, just automatically tied their aprons on when they entered the kitchen.

When did we quit doing that - when wash and wear came out and women were no longer slaves to a day (or more) of ironing for a large family?

I liked their aprons better than mine.

They were softer.

And they had rick-rack.

I want rick-rack.

I have to agree, I think it was when everyone had electric wash machines and they no longer had to keep their housedresses tidy because you just had to pop it in the washer.

*nods* When laundry stopped being a major chore, and when stain removers became more effective, aprons fell out of favor. Me, I love mine. It may not have rickrack, but it's a nice big chef-style bib apron and it saves me a lot of stained shirts. ;)

I'm not much for rick-rack, but I am fond of cabbage edging and lace. :)

(not in the same outfit lol)

My mother stopped in the early seventies. She had the most beautiful voile aprons with ruffles that she wore for her bridge club. I had aprons from my grandmother from the time I was five or so. Younger folks seem amazed that I can tie a lovely even bow behind my back. I learned on an apron (of course all those back-tie caftan tops we wore in the early 70's helped keep it going as well).

I miss rickrack also. It was a right bitch to iron if I recall correctly. Personally, I just miss "notions" in general. Pickin's are slim at the fabric store.

Well, I broke down and ordered a vintage apron online last night...

But there's no pocket on the front to hold matches to light the burners with. (Or the lantern depending on how far out in the country your granny lived)

I love that apron. Just promise me you won't wear it over a cardigan with a tissue tucked up your sleeve. 'K?

Oh honey...the tissue goes between the girls...
