mae lived until 1991, just after her 103rd birthday, and she was tickled pink in the 80s when condom ads were first on television. when she was young you *could not* talk about them at all, and she had quite a few friends who envied her lack of continual pregnancy and asked her secret, and all she could say was "well, ed takes care of that"!
they had a detached shed for the car, and she had to go out every morning first thing and sweep; unmarried couples would sneak into the shed for some privacy and often there'd be used condoms they'd discarded outside it. she said it was such a frowned on thing that she felt back then she'd just DIE if anyone came along and saw a used condom outside her garage.
